PAHO/WHO Resolution on disaster-resilient health facilities

The 27th Pan American Sanitary Conference, held in October 2007 in Washington, D.C., passed a resolution requesting countries to take political and technical measures to considerably reduce the risk of disasters, thus contributing to the overall safety of hospitals, including the safety of patients and health personnel.

Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015

The World Conference on Disaster Reduction held on18-22 January 2005 in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan, adopted the Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters. The Conference provided a unique opportunity to promote a strategic and systematic approach to reducing vulnerabilities and risks to hazards. It underscored the need for, and identified ways of, building the resilience of nations and communities to disasters.

A secure and disaster-resilient health sector in the Americas: PAHO Strategic Plan 2008-2012

The following strategic plan for a secure and disaster-resilient health sector in the Americas establishes a clear vision and delineates the Pan-American Health Organization`s priorities of reducing disaster risk and mitigating the impact of disasters on the population`s health and well-being. Disaster risk reduction is not the concern of any one single entity within PAHO but rather it is now a corporate priority.

PAHO Directing Council calls for hospitals safe from disasters

In October 2004, the Pan American Health Organization's 45th Directing Council adopted a resolution urging Member States to adopt 'Hospitals Safe from Disasters' as a national risk reduction policy.
